Bike Week est. 1937

That time of year is finally here! From March 4th-13th, Daytona Beach will host Bike Week 2011. This annual event which hosts motorcycle races, concerts, parties, and street festivals draws crowds of approximately 500,000 people from across the country.

Bike Week started on January 24, 1937 as the Daytona 200 race. This first race was a 3.2 mile beach and pavement course. Ed Kretz from California won, riding an Indian motorcycle with an average speed of 73 mph. The race took a 5 year break from 1942 to 1947 due to World War II. During the years off, an unofficial event called Bike Week was still taking place. Once the official race resumed, it gained in popularity once the late William France Sr., co-founder of NASCAR began promoting it.

Nowadays, Bike Week welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors and is enjoyed by locals and motorcycle enthusiasts world wide. And it’s all happening right here on the Palm Coast!

Feed Flagler: Part III

Last fall, Flagler raised over $13,000 in six weeks, contributing a third of it to local food pantries, and fed 2,000 people the day prior to Thanksgiving by hosting a fund-raiser. Well, their first fund-raiser of 2011 is scheduled for this Saturday, February 12th.  The Florida Agricultural Museum will host a Hot n’ Spicy Food and Music Festival to benefit Flagler’s poor.

The festival starts at 11 a.m. and Jazz singer, Linda Cole, will take the stage at 1p.m. while the “Sauce Boss” Bill Wharton will follow at 2 p.m. For $5 admission (contributing to Feed Flagler and the Agricultural Museum) you can enjoy entertainment and food until 5 p.m.

The Sauce Boss should be a particularly interesting show. Wharton has been cooking gumbo and playing the guitar for several years, entertaining and feeding 170,000 people since 1970. His act is meant to “feed the body and soul, giving hope and sustenance through music and gumbo.” He has cooked for Katrina victims, war veterans, and any other homeless victims of tragedy. He’s now making his way to Flagler to aid in helping the poor in a manner that’s bound to be creative, entertaining, and not to mention full of flavor!
